Laura’s 15 Minutes of Opera
Squad3 grad Laura Attridge has written the libretto for one of three 15-minute operas, composed by the winners of Opera Sparks – the competition to find Scotland’s most talented young composers and writers. They will be performed by Scottish Opera’s Connect Company in April in celebration of its 10th anniversary, and as part of the Year of Young People 2018.
Connect, is Scottish Opera’s youth company for 16 to 21 year old singers, instrumentalists and stage managers. Joining them will be professional soloists Lise Christensen and Hazel McBain, for the shows on Saturday 7 April, at 2pm and 7pm. Then To The Elements is a modern tale of parenthood written by Laura and with a score by Lewis Murphy, graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and a Glyndebourne Young Composer.
The winners, announced in January 2017, were awarded a commissioning fee of £3,500 and receive mentoring support throughout the creative process.
Laura and Lewis will be leading a collaboration between the Squad and the Royal Northern College of Music starting this March, six Squad writers will work with six RNCM composers to explore the relationship between words and music in songs for opera/music theatre. RNCM musicians and singers will help us share the results in May.
