Tales from the Underbanks

Over the 2021-22 Christmas/New Year Holidays, the Writing Squad ran a short story competition as part of Rediscovering the Underbanks – a project led by Stockport Council.

The Squad is Stockport’s only Arts Council England portfolio funded organisation, and our director Steve Dearden has helped develop the town’s first cultural strategy.

The short story competition awarded writers in two categories: adult and under 18, with winners receiving tokens to be spent at the Underbanks’ fantastic indie book and magazine store, Rare Mags.

The winning stories – alongside a number of other highly commended entries – will be published as an anthology on the 17th of September 2022 on Stockport’s Heritage Open Day. The book also features artwork by artist Eamonn Murphy.
